A really good place to start from would be to get a service manual for your car and look in the section Rebuild/Overhaul. It will list out the steps and even have pics. It will give you a good idea of the amount of work involved and then you can decide if you think you can handel it.

t replace roods ana pistons you will need to pull the head off, then the oil pan, then the crank....basically its 90% or more of a rebuild.
dont forget to get all new bearings and rings and gaskets as well as hone the cylinder bores, or overbore if they are worn.

im looking to do the same thing for my d16y8. how heavy is just the bare-block?? would i need an engine puller? i'm going to take the oil pan and head off first, so JUST the block/crank/pistons. also...is it required that the cylinders be bored or honed if they still look clean and smooth?? i would like to do the install in about 4 days or so. possible? i've taken the head off before, removed the oil pan before, and removed the tranny as well. what else is there?

well you got ot measuer the bearing clearances etc to make sure youa re gettign the right size, and measuring the cylinder bores to make sure they are witihin specs as well. i would always hone bores to make sure you get good ring seal.
but i dont do this kind of work myself....i always have a machine shop do my shortblock build. i trust someone that measures the clearances every day over my own judgement.
