Tell the shop to lick your balls. Unless they are replacing EVERY part of your a/c system with new Honda parts, then ... thats all i have to say.

You can look on ebay for a reman. a/c compressor, which is usually around 150. Or you can post a WTB ad in the classifieds of the forums. Either way, the only thing you will need a shop to do is charge the a/c freon after you are done installing the compressor. That should cost no more than 100 I would say.

A '96 is probably running R-134a instead of freon. You can buy a kit at Wal-Mart or any auto store to refill that stuff yourself for about $35 to $40. Parted out A/C compressors are on eBay all the time going for about $100.

I bought my compressor from a auto store that ordered it from the Honda dealer it was around $200. my uncle put my compressor on himself less than 30 min. $1100 is waayyy overpricing for the job..
