how to wire vtec?

how to wire vtec?
I have a 97 civic 3dr(d16y7) and did the mini me swap with a d16z6 head. I have the wiring harness for the vtec but do not know how to activate it. Should I buy a d16y8 computer or I have herd about a relay. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!
