K, I'm going to write a stinkin' novel:
You'll need to jack your car up, take off your wheel, disassemble your suspension, and pull the axle out. You've got 90% of this done already, so all you'll need to do is pull the hub outwards (2 tips: 1) bring a friend 2) turn the steering wheel all the way) and pull the axle strait out of the transmission. If the car is already up, it'll take you 20 minutes. Go to Kragen and trade that shit in. The axles for my 89 crx cost ~120 plus core. Your civic probably has different dimensions, so it may cost more. Installation is the reverse; pop it into the transmission, slide it into the hub, reassemble suspension, and torque that axle nut on real tight. voila.
Be warned, disassembling suspension can be tricky, especially if yours is such that there's constant spring pressure even with the car jacked off the ground. If you find that there's no spring pressure (you should be able to physically move the spring around) then it's just a wrench-monkey job. Otherwise, be very careful and get somebody to help you; the spring WILL have to release, and when it does, you don't want to be in its way. It's difficult to explain how to deal with a compressed spring and I don't totally remember how I delt with it, so if you happen to have a compressed spring with the car jacked up, come back, we'll help you
