Default 92 Legend Freeze plug

My 92 Legend (201k miles) car has been overheating, and judging by the large pool of coolant that forms under the car, there's a good reason. I cant seem to locat the source of the leak, so I had the car towed to my mechanic. He thinks its a leaking freeze plug, and says he wont know until he goes in. He said it will take some time, and will be expensive ($800-$900ish, I assume just for the labor).

My question is this: What exactly is involved in getting at the freeze plug? Does the engine have to be removed for this procedure? What hope does an aspiring DIY have if he wanted to try taking this project on himself? Any comments or advice would be appriciated.

Thanks,
~run
