read through the thread twice, looked @ all the pics twice

thanks WCS, bought a clutch kit for $85, bought 1/2 breaker bar
& 32MM from Loews Home Improvement & off I went.
1 day to take it apart, 1 day to put it back 2gether
i figger this is how most things in the world get done,
1 person decides to do something, in this case post a
great diy write up, complete with pics.

Youll have to put me on the list for positive comments. Very detailed I must say. Only problems I had was the damn keeper pin and the aligning of the tranny. Other than that it was nothin. I actually took out the whole tranny just to open up the bell housing to replace the Input Shaft Bearing. I read through another guide for that but, loved this guide to get me to it. Thanks

While pulling the motor, I got to that pin. The dreaded one The one that made me go to the hardware store to grab the 5/16 punch. I'd say it took me 100+ wacks to get it to finally come off :rant: Funny thing is that I didn't give up. Cold beer to follow.

I beat the sh*t out of that dreaded pin. Couldn't get it out.
Just left the shifting rod connected to tranny.
87 Si has cable clutch & the balljoint/castlenut is 180' flipped
from the later ones. A good whack to the balljoint got it loose.
figgered i saved $500 & learned something in the process.
I thought you had to take the whole damn engine out, till
i read this thread. it rocks, told all my friends about it.

 

I have rented a balljoint separator from Kragen but it did not work. How do you get the balljoint loose from the lower control arm without damage? What part of the lower control arm do you hit with a sledge hammer? Will the lower control arm dent or crack?

 

there is a little trick that you can do. While the tire is off you simply raise the hub and get a 14mm or so socket. You'll now want to put the socket in the portion of the arm near the ball joint. The area im talking about is the one that would squeze onto the socket when you lower the floor jack. After you lower the jack, just push down on the hub manually with all you got. Make sure you untighten the lower balljoint bolt but, not take it off completly. After awhile of pishing down, you will eventually hear a loud pop which is the seperation of the LControlArm and the LBalljoint.
