Default 4th gen???

I have wanted to know this for a while. Why is the 88-91 cars called 4th gen? Is there someone that can give me a list of the years from 1st to 4th. If 4th is88-91 I guess 3rd would be the 87's. I remember there being a really really old civic. I think it was called a 1200 or something and was a 74 or something like that so I guess that would be 1st but I have no clue on second or if I am right about 1st. letme know

Every new body style of Civic is called a Generation...

73-78 is 1st Generation Civic (I THINK)
79-83 is 2nd Gen Civic (I THINK)
84-87 is 3rd Gen Civic or 1st Gen CRX
88-91 is 4th Gen Civic or 2nd Gen CRX
92-95 is 5th Gen Civic
96-00 is 6th Gen Civic
01-Current is 7th Gen Civic

I'll edit it if that is the wrong years.

For 1987, the four-wheel-drive (4WD) system for the Civic wagon was revised. "Real Time" 4WD automatically channeled power to the wheels that had optimum grip and did away with the driver having to decide (and then move a lever) if four-wheel drive was needed.
One little mistake, there was never a lever to engage 4WD. It was a push button before the change to the auto system.

Thans a lot really appreaciate it...I bet more then 70% of the people who own a 88-91 call it a 4th gen and don't even know why and are too embassered to ask. I asked because I get asked that question all the time and don't have a answer. I finally decided to ask when I got into a big argument with a Honda tech. at a Honda dealer about it. Thanks
