Default realtime 4wd

How exactly does this transfer of power work. I understand the slippage of the front wheels factors into the transfer but whats the percentage and what mechanical funtions take place. Will the 4wd drive only work with the 6 speed trans. last question is does this system share anything other then its name with the crv

the cr-v is an all wheel drive system meaning it powers the fronts until the rears slip...this gives it better fuel mileage instead of losing gas powering the rear wheels when un-needed...you can search around the web or go to the honda dealer and read a brochure on how the cr-v's awd system worked

the civic 4wd was that...all time 4wd which hurts gas mileage...only the 6spd tranny worked with the 4wd system

I think the power for the rear wheels comes off of the front differential. On the Civic Wagons there is a viscous coupling on the drive shaft that allows the front wheels to power the car normally until they begin to lose traction. When there is a difference in speed (about 3%) between the front and rear axles, the viscous coupling will send power to the rear wheels. The CRV has a more complicated system that I've heard doesn't work any better.
