yah a short shifter doesnt really do nething special just makes it so there is less space for u to move the shifter b4 u hit the next gear, shift linkage is what changes when u get a new engine so go for it, they are all about the same, there are no special brands, it is very easy to install urself, u can get one for the car u have, doesnt matter what engine u get later.

and it doesn't matter what its made out of right?

yah just the shifter makes no difference, if u change to a hydro tranny later on that is just how u release the clutch plate not how u put it into gear. you can use whatever short shifter is made for ur car, and when u eventually swap engines u just use different sized shift linkage to actuate the gears on the different tranny. shift linkage is what is attached on the bottom of ur car and goes to ur transmission, jack ur car up and take a look its very simple when u look at it all to understand, kinda weird trying to explain it though, i dont know what they are made of but get one with new bushings on the for the lower connection, i believe all of them come with new bushings just make sure u install them. just go out buy a short shifter and itll have instructions on how to do it.
