Default B18B in a 91 civic or crx

I'm looking at replacing my integra with a 91 civic hatch or a crx (my dream car since I was 10). There's a junkyard close to home that has a wrecked 92 LS teg with 65 000 km's on the engine. I could buy the engine and tranny (and anything else that's left on the car) for dirt cheap. But I need to know: 1. Is it possible and/or worth the effort. 2. What I'm going to need to finish the swap.

Well, you CAN go w/ the b18b but it comes w/ a hydro clutch system. The 4g hb/ 2g crx has a cable system. The B18A is very simile to the B, but it has a cable trans (other minor differences). It just so happens you're in luck, Sport Compact Car magazine just did an article on dropping a B18A in a 4g hb. I would say the best thing to do right now is pick it up, I would link to the site but they haven't updated to the most recent mag. I just recieve my mag in the mail a few days ago so it may not be on shelfs yet....for info in the mean time http://www.hasport.com/Tech/Hasport%20Swaps.htm

Enjoy

The problem is that I don't have access to a B18a. The only engine that I can buy for cheap is a B18b. What would be involved in putting this engine in instead of the a (engine and transmission wise)?

You can use the b18B...the problem is running the hydro tranny. You have to install a clutch master cylinder, all your lines, and who knows what else (I know little to nothing about hydro clutch set-ups). And if I am correct the b18b is an obd1 motor, which opens up a whole new "can of worms". I think the wiring would be enough to deter me from running this "budget project".

Not to be an ass but I don't think you relize the money involved.

HASport mounts~$450 (Best in the business IMO)
HASport modded linkage ~$150
Wiring harness(if you don't do it yourself) ~$200
Axles(most likely needed)~$150
Not to mention the cost of parts need off the integra

You can snag a zc motor that is a direct bolt up for much cheaper, or a complete b16a package for a decent price...not trying to rain on your parade but the b18b just doesn't seem worth it.

That's about all the help I can give you being as I have not attempt this swap myself. Good luck...what ever choice you make.

Ok, you are really confusing me here. The stock engine in all USDM RS/LS/GS 90-93 Integras was the B18A, cable transaxle and all. The 90-91 models were a 130hp OBD-0, while the 92-93 models had a 140hp OBD-1 engine. I know this because I owned a beautiful 92 GS.

We are talking about a B18A from a 92 Integra, right?

That aside, any B-series cable transaxle will bolt to a 94-95 OBD-1 B18B or a 96-01 OBD-2 B18B and will save you from converting to a hydrolic transaxle.

And as previously mentioned, the rules of OBD conversion applies, however it is not too hard to convert an OBD-1 to an OBD-0.

The B18a was in the 90-91 integra (non-obd, the engine I had in my old integra), as far as I knew, the 92-93 had obd 1 in them. If I'm wrong, great, it solves all my problems. But are you sure that the 92-on tegs have a B18a? I could have sworn that they had the B18b.

I am 100% sure that 92-93 Integras used the B18A block. I owned a 100% original '92, and its engine block was clearly stamped B18A. The only possible way the junk car has a -B is if the old -A was worn out and replaced by a new motor.

What would be involved in converting a non-obd vehicle to obd 1? (I'm really starting to like the ZC idea)

I recently bought an 88 Hatch as a beater. I have no intentions at the moment of doing a swap, but I'd like to read up on the subject. CRwreckz... if you could find out what issue of SCC that guide is in, I'd appreciate it. Kai, what does OBD stand for? I've heard the term plenty of times, but never knew what it meant. Also, if I was going to swap in a GSR engine, wouldn't it be wise to swap in a GSR tranny as well?
