i have a d15 non vtec.. and i have massive sputtering in low r's.... so im thinking it could be 1 of 5 things... bad sparkplugs, distributor, dirty injectors, fuel filter, or head gasket



i really need to know if you have encountered this problem and fixed it easy.. head gasket would be no problem too do.. just want to know what too fix before i fix it and find out it was something else... ya feel me?





edit: also.. no check engine lights on when the car is running

Although I'm no mechanic I'd install a new set of plugs& your distributor. Also maybe your fuel filter. Doubt you need to do a head gasket. Oh, BTW if you have a EG 92-95 you want to post in Del Sol/ Civic section.

^^AGREE!! doubt it's the headgasket, if it were your have white exhaust smoke. or foamy oil? Is that right??? How's it run at higher rpm's?

try a top end cleaner first before putting in new plugs and dis. cap.

id also do a compression test to see how the engine is doing as well, this will give you an idea on what to do next.

it only sputters at the beginning of each gear.. after it gets going it runs fine

go to the fuel side. sputters during takeoff. lacks fuel, good idea to change the fuel filter. do a fuel system cleaning. sea foam

A-series

Not sure if it would be as sustained or consistent, but it sounds like what I experienced when the ignition coil was on it's way out on my '92. The problem got better if I used a smaller plug gap, worse if the gap was wider of course. I no longer had the issue after replacing it, when the coil finally died.

i put in a new fuel filter and new plugs, when i took the old ones out i could see that the sparkplug gaskets weren't working anymore lol so i replaced the gaskets... everything works fine now..

and what exactly is sea foam? never used it before

A-series

Seafoam is just a cleaning product. It does indeed work great for cleaning the manifold (as well as the combustion chamber) when used according to the directions on the can. However, at least on some models, it can cause the Idle Control Valve (referred to as EACV or, on newer models, IACV on Hondas) issues, requiring you to either remove and clean it w/ carb. cleaner, or disconnect the valve and set the base idle higher. The problem, or potential problem, being that it lubricates as well as clean. That's one of it's benefits though when used in the engine oil or gas, where it also works well.
