The "legal and recommended way" would be to take it to an authorized A/C service station and have them relieve the system so you don't pollute the atmosphere.

Other than that, stand clear when loosening the high pressure line, but you didn't hear that from me...

the nipples up near the firewall?

whats it cost to be professionally emptied?

my car is no longer self-propelled...so getting it to a service area would be improbable.

The lines at the A/C compressor are sometimes easier to get to, the high pressure line is the main one you need to worry about, but once the system is vented [and you'll know it if the system was mostly or fully charged to begin with] you'll be fine with all the other lines.

Also, if you are truly eco-concerned, there are mobile refrigerant reclaiming companies that could come to you.

what is the canister about 1.5 soda cans tall and the same width in the front driver fender? it sits next to the washer fluid and is connected to the AC.

The canister is the Receiver and Fliter/Dryer: serves as a reservoir which filters and removes moisture from the refrigerant. It has lines that connect it to the condenser.

Chiltons owns you.
