Engine Building: CRVtec or B18?
Hi all,
I'm am ready to start building a motor for a CRX I haven't even found yet.
So I'm trying to make decisions and would like opinions on equipment.
Here's what I know:
I'm building this car for fun, so I can quiet down my loser 240sx friends. Maybe I'll race it when SOLOII comes to San Antonio, but I'll probably just deliver pizza with it. :snoopy:
The whole thing tore completely apart, built from scratch on an engine stand, no rush, all the neat tools and a very helpful person with race motor building experience....a stock-car bubba
I've got to earn all the money I spend on this thing so cost is a factor.
The engine will always be NA, though I might run No2 at some point.
I don't see a problem with running the stock cam and crankshaft for now, unless of course somebody has some input from past experience.
What I want to know:
User opinions on which block, B20 or B18...
And on that note, How much is reasonable for a B20/B18 long/shortblock?
I've heard that a B20 should be re-sleeved before building, any truth to that?
Since this motor is getting rebuilt immediately and I'm in no rush, would it be a terrible idea to buy a burned up motor or something with a spun bearing to save some loot?
Favorite brand of connecting rods/pistons? Is the gain over stock even worth it?
Favorite brands of all the peripherals, ie. oil pump, water pump, camgears?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^really just the brands to avoid on this one huh?
The B20 gets a head off of a B16 right? Will a vtec head off a B18 work?
Do I understand correctly that a B16 head can also be put on a B18 block for a little extra power? How much better does that b16 head flow/What's the gain anyway?
The B18 was made across enough years that I should be able to choose between OBDI and OBDII. Which is preferable?
B20B or B20Z, any difference?
Which is the ideal transmission (code) that mates to whichever engine I build? And what model car did that ship with?
Did I cover everything? What did I miss......::scratches head::
I know I'm asking for a lot of information and most of them are others' opinions but I'd really appreciate any and all input I can get on this subject.
Thanks,
Russell

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
honestly i would use the b18 because u can just swap in any other b16/18 pistons, and arp rod bolts are a must, my stock ls rods go to 8 grand just fine, the b18 has more volume but if you want to have more compression you have to go aftermarket for pistons, simularities between the b16 and b18 are same bore size, and between the b18 and b20 have the same deck height.
