How the heck do I get the alternator pulley off my engine block, if I put it in reverse will that strain my tranny at all?

Uh... please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't your alternator pulley on your alternator?

Default I was confused

I ment my crankshaft pulley, and I also forgot that forward or reverse have no effect on the crankshaft, at least not in holding the pulley in place.

I believe I haveto lock the flywheel and then get it off. So I'll do that after I remove the old block and can reach it.

There's a special tool for holding the crank pulley while you break the bolt free. Otherwise, an impact wrench will usually work.

As a last resort, some people have been known to put a strong breaker bar on the bolt head, rotate the bar (and pulley) to a point where it's safely wedged in place, and then bump the starter.

5th gear and get somebody to hold the brakes while you break it with a breaker bar. Never hold the pully itself(unless it's a tool designed for it), unless you want to break it. I broke mine the last time i took it off and had to buy another one, which was expensive because i could'nt find one at the junk yard. But, a very powerful impact is the best way. Mine is a whimp, when it comes to crankshaft pulley bolts.

use a 1/2 in or 1 in impact gun, the bolt will come right off
