Default civic wont start.

Well today i was driving my car around and everything was fine until i stopped at my buddies place to see his 240sx. Then when i was on my way out i couldnt get my car to start, id turn my key with the clutch in and nothing but lights and stereo would come on. It wouldnt crank or anything. We then jumped started it and it ran fine but it still doesnt start unless you jump start it. Please help

Either Battery or Alternator.

Clean the battery terminals.
(dirty terminals = not enough current to turn the starter; but, enough for stereo and lights)

Check the electrical connection to the starter.
Check the engine grounds.

well i cleaned all the grounds and tryed to start it, still got nothing. I decided to hold the ignition to start for 20 secondes and see what happends then i started getting code 8 (Top Dead Center) on my pm6 ecu. Do you think this would be the reason why it would even do anything?

TDC sensor dead/malfunctioning
or
the wiring between ECU and TDC messed up.

_or_

timing belt slipped

Starter soleniod connections clean and secure?
Check fusable link (and the other fuses under the hood)

It could be your ignition switch going bad. (just the "start" position)

(I'm looking at my Haynes repair manual for Honda Civic '84 to '91, pp5-13 and 5-14).

I think the code 8 came from the ECU assuming the engine was turning when it really wasn't turning during the 20 seconds of holding the key in the "start" position (when the starter didn't turn).

Not a TDC sensor problem.
