Default Rebuild or swap? what to do...

I am thinking about re-doing the rex I have parked outside my house. I drove it the other day and realized its so much more fun to drive than newer cars. Only thing is I don't want to put a lot of money into it because you can't get the money back. So I'm wondering whats the best route. The engine in there is so-so, but the tranny is shot. I am thinking of just pulling them both out and putting in another d16a6 and just swapping it myself -- I figure I can probably get a decent price on one. Or does it make more sense to rebuild what I already have? I'm thinking of a budget of about 1000, is that realistic?

On a $1000 budget? Just swap it out... You could do either a DOHC ZC, or SOHC VTEC for about that price, probably even cheaper...

i was actually just thinking of replacing (as in d16a6) but i havent really found a place where you can buy them online or anything... was d16a6 used in any jdm engines? i really just want it to pass smog, and i know the car is relatively quick with just a sohc in it, ive driven one in pristine condition and it had some pep. so it doesnt make any sense to rebuild?

Not the tranny, well not yourself... I hear it can be a PITA... But no none of the JDM cars came with the D16A6... Maybe u can rebuild the engine and just get another tranny...

Where r u located? I have a d-series(d16a6 to be specific) transmission collecting dust in my garage, with new linkage and short shifter.
