Default Just had an overhaul and now...

it's time to get my emmisions test in just 10 days I got about 500 miles on her now since the overhaul. My uncle replaced the rings, valves guides, water pump (and a few other things-I don't remember everything my uncle said he replaced) basically what it needed due to work rings/guides and a few cautionary things to get it to pass emissions and stop smokin'.

What would you guys say is decent break-in mileage after an overhaul? I want the new parts good and broke in-before I'm forced to let a 16 year old at my local emissions place rev it & rough it up

500 miles sounds like a good enough break-in range. Does your car still smoke?? Good luck.
Let us know if you pass.

Hey again, nope, more smoke since the overhaul-finally had to take the cigarettes away

I'll let you know whether it passes.
My uncle did a lot of work, he said it was smoking cause the rings and valves guides were completely shot. He replaced the rings, valve guides, valve seals, ground the valves had the head checked out (and some other things, I don't remeber all he said though) he said it's all tight now-I noticed it even warms up quicker now!-he said parts of the engine and some seals, still looked new still-after 180,500 miles! That's why I love my Honda

Good show, glad to hear it passed. I would recommend wear-in times over 500 miles, but it treated you well.

Thanks Kai.

I've asked you stuff before and your known on this site for being very knowledgeable. I've got a few ?s for you. I don't know much about cars but wanna keep my car good for as long as possible.
Now that the motors overhauled, since some parts are new/some are old would you use Valvoline or Valvoline Maxlife, or does it matter?

Also, I've been told different things by different people and don't know what to believe. People say how you shift and drive causes more or less wear on an engine.
My Civics 5-speed, I think I know how to shift for minimal wear but now I have to wonder. I've always thought gentle was best for long-life but someone told me it's actually bad for the engine???:dunno: they say Hondas are high revving engines and let em' rev high before shifting cause it's good for em'.
I've used to shifting when I hear it rev a little, not letting it rev too much/high before shifting. I listen and when it sounds right, shift it. It always feels right like this:
1st gear-up to 15 mph or so
2rd-from about 15 to 25-30 or so
3rd-anywhere from around 25-30 to 35-40 max
4th-anywhere 35-40 to 50 or so
5th-45-50 mph to anything faster

Is this wrong? or what do you recommend?
Thanks again for your help.

It seems to run quite a bit better, it used to lag really bad and smoke like a freight train. Now those probs are fixed. No oil burning yet and just did my first oil change at 1,000 miles .
It doesn't really sound any different. Almost sounds like needs valve adjustment , but my uncle had to adjust them as part of the job. Not sure why it sounds that way. My uncle thinks it sounds fine. He's a really good mechanic so I'll go with it for now.
