As you're in CA, you've got limited options because of smog laws. The ZC won't pass. Check out www.ardperformance.com & www.hasport.com for engines.

My VW runs ok, it's just not making sufficient boost and power from the aftermarket turbokit I'm using. I really ought to be making around 25lbs of boost and getting somewhere around 250-260whp, but I'm only making 20lbs and 221.7whp (according to my last dyno figures. My powerband is also kinda screwy in that it rises to 3.k, then dips, and rises back up agian until about 5k, then loses it.

ZC is a good motor for boost!! I got one in my EG....yes 92 hatch....I was on the same boat..saving for a b16 and my vx motor blew...I had low cash and it was my only transportation...no other car at my house so I had to throw in a ZC..luckly I found an obd1 ZC the rare one I been told from a 92 something in Japan...
