it has a little shaft play but within service limits...but i'd advise that any used turbo you will always want to rebuild (i was going to rebuild it anyway but no longer need it)...i have most of the items you'll need except a rebuild kit which you can get
you really need to know how much boost he plans to run...if you are running less than 5lbs then an FMU is a good cheap alternative...anything 6lbs and above you'll want something more precise like a piggyback, extra injector controller, or standalone/hacked ecu
i run 6lbs daily driver and will turn it up to ~8lbs at the track...i'm running a MPI extra injector controller and 2 450cc/hr injectors and have put on 15k miles on my wagon and it it still running strong, no smoke, and i have good compression across all cylinders
I had the emanage. Then I sold it because it sucked and threw random CELs for no apparent reason. The amount of splicing is insane as well.
Find a way to chip out either your current ECU or find a chippable one to turn it into a standalone TUNABLE fuel managment system so you don't have to deal with the crappy piggybacks, check valves, and FMUs.
Be prepared for over an hour of hacking and splicing of the factory harness, an installation manual riddled with spelling and instruction errors, and countless annoying and pointless CELs.
