Find a good used tranny... Or a rebuilt one... Thats probably your best bet... I dont think its cost efficient to rebuilt one yourself...

Have you ever had a trans apart? It's a lot more difficult then just opening it up, replacing the synchros, and bolting it back together. If you want it to last for more then one thousand miles, that is.

For grinds, I like to replace the trans oil a couple times, allowing about a thousand miles between changes. If it's just as bad, it's time for a used or rebuilt trans. D-series engines don't put out neary enough power to justify a performance trans, mind you when you say "performance" I think multi-thousand dollar dog boxes.

check out a company called speedgear(i think) for carbon coated syncros. I take it an SI tranny you could replace fifth gear with an HF gear. Another choice would be to coat the parts in an antifriction coating (swain coatings should be able to do it).

coat SYNCROS in an ANTIFRICTION coating?

That would totally ruin the entire point of a syncro.

Gearspeed uses carbon syncros BECAUSE carbon is a good friction material, and they reduce downshift jump due to them getting to speed quicker.

what tranny fluid are you useing to begin with...most people i know it ends up being the wrong tranny fluid, I.E. regular oil, or the clutch/fly.

you need to put in honda tranny fluid before you assume that your syncros are bad.
