Default speedometer problem

This morning as I drove to school I noticed my speedometer needle going crazy, then all of a sudden it just died and stayed at 0. Then my check engine light came on. When I got to school I checked the computer and it was blinking 17 times. Isn't 17 blink the speed sensor and where is it located?

In my 1991 CRX Si, it's on the back of the gauge cluster where the speedo cable connects. (On some hondas, it's mounted on the transmission where the speedo cable comes out.)

Check the speedo cable connection at both ends.
(my car was throwing a code 17; but, it was caused by a loose ground connection to the gauge cluster.)

my 88 crx did the same thing i went in where the cable hooks to the transmission and cleaned it of with a wire brush and then pulled it through make sure that you dont pull it all the way out, only a few inch's and then just put it back in and then go to the back of where the gauges are and make sure it is all the way in. sometimes the clip breaks and it comes loose every so often. but i doubt that it is the the actual cable. if it is that those tend to be a little pricey for just a cable. hope that helps!!

Well like mr.crx said, 17 is speed sensor. It could be several different things. Your speed sensor in the trans has a little gear on it, that might have broken a couple of teeth off that gear, the cable might have seized up and broke, the actual cluster might be bad, or the clip the holds the cable to the cluster become's brittle cause of heat and soforth cause it's plastic and broken off adn the cable just slipped out. I hope that expain's it a little better.
