Default AEM hybrid intake system

i was just looking over this article http://www.hondaswap.com/features/20...ke-install.php and I was wondering why the tube goes down by the tranny and then bends into the wheel well. I am using a '99-'00 civic si generic intake and it goes straight down the little hole like it should. why go through the trouble to change mounts and all that jazz just to put on a new intake?
Note: i did relocate my battery but my old AEM CAI (stock engine & bat) still used that hole.

The routing is different on some cars. My Integra had the routing going out near the tranny when I had my CAI.
