the ecu blinks red, not green.

count the flashes, and those are your codes. there may be more than one code, so count the number of flashes a couple of times to be certain.

edit. forgot that the car starts sometimes.

did you recently work on your car or change anything around????? Also just cuz you replaced the cap and rotor doesn't neccasialy mean you are gettin spark..check and make sure...

Keep in mind that the distributor itself has sensors in the bottom. If you get a CODE 4-Crank Angle Sensor-you will eventually be unable to start the car until it cools down a good bit and then it will run for a while and die again. Assuming a D16a6 with a TD-02U dizzy you will eventually have to replace the entire thing. (want one I have it for sale somewhere on this board)
I will agree with others-that you must check for codes. Even with a swap there is no guarantee that something internal has failed. The evidence of bearing failure is that the inside of the cap and various components will have a coating of a reddish dust. The other possibility is that you have a wiring problem at the connectors. If you have a PM^ ECU and you have done any arc welding without removing (I have one for sale) it is possible that it is bad-but very unlikely in general. If you have any water in the passenger footwell-clean up completely and check all of the wiring there.

Good luck

last time it just died on me it was the ecu..had water in it..well now i check for codes andi have nothing..blinks once the key is in s. but thats it.. could it just be the ecu..it just rained recently..and it hasnt in a while but i have the ecu in a bag, like some1 sugest.but not sealed cuz the harness..but its dry all around no mositure in the bag... i am almost positive that the probelm is ignition.. if any1 has any other suggests let me know..if not..i am going to bring it to the shop wher i had the ecu/dignosis was put it..still under warrenty.lol but i am just hoping its the ecu and nothing else.. thanks

check if you are gettin acual spark...the way I do it (which is prolly an old guy way and everyone here prolly does it different) is take a spark plug hose out of the head; take a screwdriver(with a plastic handle) and stick it in the hose so the tip of the screwdriver is touching the metal ring in the tube; now hold the hose over something metal in your car...(the ground on your head will be fine) and have someone try and start the car..(hold the rubber hose so you dont get shocked!)..now if you see spark then viola you are gettin spark...this is how I check you should try it so you can determine whats wrong...if your ecu isn't trowin any codes and your check engine light isn't on...I don't see what a diagonstic test would do for you..since you car isn't saying nothings wrong...well thats just my .02

alright guys, this is brokeasscrx's freind, i'm used to working on toyotas myself so i'm not sutre of the crx specifics. the car obviously has some spark, otherwise it woudlnt idle. the problem is definitly in ignition, be in ecu, rotor, cap, coil, or ignitor.... the problem isnt getting spark. its that the spark is breaking up under throttle.

If you are convinced it is the dizzy...take the cap and rotor off and you will see 2 box thingys (can't think of the names for the life of me right now..lol) and you can test the voltage..I believe and see if they are working...To me I had a similar problem but it doesn't sound like spark is your problem...it sounds more like your engine is losing air (like suffercating) you might wanna check all your vacumm lines and trottle body and cable...like I said before..did you do anything to your car recently because something messed up then or is this just out of the blue??? But my opinion is that you don't have a problem with spark sounds more like the problem is related to the intake manifold area..you might also wanna check your TPS too...just some advice from me and if I'm wrong it doesn't hurt just to check and you learn on the way...good luck
