tachometer needed!
The only way I know to engage VTEC off a tach is through a shift light output, and that's a bad idea. That's why you use an RPM switch, it is probably the most common way of engaging VTEC in LS/VTEC and mini-me hydrids along with rewiring for the ECU to do it with the proper ECU.
