How can I positively identify a car as an Si other than wheel size and stickers? Is there a code in the VIN? ok, I'm an import noob (see sig). What specifics are different between Si vs. regular CRX? Suspension, engine, trans, etc? My friend and myself want to prep one for auto-x and track days and I'm just trying to learn what I can.

si engine is a d16a6. It says what the motor is on it. I think the rear suspension on the si has a rear sway bar and others don't. Si's and like the 91 dx's have body colored bumpers, not black. The interior is a lot sportier, kinda like racing buckets. I think si crx's have rear disc brakes, but i'm not certain what years and stuff, i got a 91 hatch so i only know some about them. There's a little help 'til someone adds on.

 

Most Si's have a sun roof, Si badges, I'm pretty sure 90-91 Si CRX's have rear disc brakes, and the Si has for sure a 1.6L

 

The Si will have, among others I am sure to miss:
Sunroof
- Rear Sway
- Rear Disc Brakes (89-91 models, 88 Si still has drums)
- Nicely bolstered (and probably ripped) Recaro designed seats
- Cluster with tach that redlines at 7k? rpm
- The engine is a D16A6. It is stamped on the engine block, to the left of the exhaust manifold, right below the head. Just wipe the grease away.
- Stock 14" Alloy wheels

a stock crx si can run low 15's with a good driver and in good running condition...not bad for 108hp...with just a b16a1 swap it'll run mid 14s with good tuning and good driver...i do know that in the mid 90s when ford switched to the 4.6 liter and the heavier chassis, the crx si could actually hang with it...even beat it in a 1/4 mile!

That's odd, my Si engine is a D15A3. j/k On the 1g 84-87 CRXs, the Si usually came with a sunroof, 14x5 alloy wheels, MPFI, a better geared transmission, and most importantly, a shiny badge that says "Si". If you are running in a stock class in auto-x, the Si's do pretty well and can often embarrass much *faster* cars.

 

Well, thanks for the replies. We got a car and its an Si! Let the fun begin! I'm amazed at how smooth the engine revs. quite a bit of understeer but it has trashed shocks, crappy tires, and worn out bushings. It has a ways to go, but should be a quick trip. Its an '89 Si and lots of fun

 

1st thing you want to do is spend $100 for replacements of the bushings and $100 for new rear trailing arm bushings (prothane or better rear bearings)...that'll make a big difference in handling and make it crisp
