Default 96 3.2TL Temperature fluxuating from mid cool to HOT as if overheating.

Hi,

My car is doing something really weird and i don't quite know what it is. If anyone knows anything about this, please advise.

Problem: The temperature gage needle is going from mid cool to hot(overheat). I notice this happens when i sit in traffic or when the car is slowing down. Sometimes it would automatically go back down. I also notice that once the car is moving the temperature goes down which would make sense because air is flowing through the engine. Does anyone think it's the thermostat??? I used to have a 91Honda Prelude that did something similar. Please help, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
