Default Different location for the Head unit

I installed an Alpine CDA-9811 in my car the past week, in the factory location. (96 Civic Ex). Is it possible, and has anyone mounted a radio in the area above the cup holders? there is a small compartment that looks about the right size to hold a head unit, I would like to put it there. Any pointers?

it is definatly possible to put the deck down there... You'll want to get the cassette deck mounting kit from honda... the optional cassette deck went in that space, so with the mounting kit, you'll have more of a factory appearance. Then it will just be a matter of extending the wirring.
