Default System Question

Im planning out my system and i ran into a fork in the road. I was wondering if you guys ever heard of running 2 subs off of a mono amp?? I was told that you just twist both negative wires together and both positive wires together and just wire them together like you would with one sub? He also said that it would hit lower and harder. I dont know that much about car audio so i would like to get some professional advice.
This are my subs that ill be getting:
http://etronics.net/alpsws1041.html
and the amp he told me:
http://store.yahoo.com/etronicsnet/alpmrdm300.html
So basically i was wondering if this type of setup would work:

Or if not than what would you recommend?? The only thing i might change is the amp because i dont want to get a different sub. Preferably an Alpine or Kicker amp...

The link to the subs don't help out with the specs. Here they are:

Power Handling

Power Handling Capacity (Peak) : 600W
Power Handling Capacity (RMS) : 200W

Thiel Small Parameters

Coil Height (Hvc) : 32.6mm
Cone Area (Sd) : 339.79 sq. cm
D.C.Coil Resistance (Re) : 3.6 ohm
Electrical Q (Qes) : 0.65
Equivalent Suspension Stiffness (Vas) : 34 liters(1.20cu.ft.)
Free Air Resonance (Fs) : 30Hz
Frequency Response : 25Hz - 1kHz
Gap Height (Hag) : 10mm
Impedance (Nominal) : 4 ohm
Inductance (Le) : 1.95mH at 1kHz (0.69mH at 20kHz)
Linear Excursion (X linear) : 11.3mm
Maximum Excursion (X peak) : 22.6mm
Mechanical Excursion (Peak-to-Peak) : 40mm
Mechanical Q (Qms) : 9.57
Sensitivity : 87 dB/W/M
Total Loudspeaker Q (Qts) : 0.61

For the amp, the more important:

150 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
300 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms

Basically what the guy is doing with the subs is running it parallel. This is combining two subs into one so that it lowers the impedance level, giving you more out of the subs. Not to say ish about what you're getting, but I wouldn't unless it's really cheap! That setup wouldn't bump as good as you'd want. If you really like alpine amps, go for Type R's. Bumps a whole lot better. As for the amp, find something with more juice.

I would get the Type R's but im running on a tight budget and that would require me to get a better amp. Also what kind of amp would you recommend, preferably Alpine or Kicker?

okay...just wanna let ya know some stuff...you're gonna be running the subs at 1.8 ohm load...make sure the amp you get is 1 ohm stable...second...make sure you get an amp that puts out atleast 400 watts RMS at 2 ohm load...might wanna go for about 450 and not turn it up all the way...for calculating resistance i have some formulas for you...

Parallel Resistance: (R1 x R2)/(R1+R2)

Series Resistance: R1 + R2

hope that helped

im confused

if he ran two 4 ohm subs in parallel, that would be a 2 ohm load, right?

yeah...woops...i was lookin at the coil resistance instead of the impedance..sorry if i confused you

Ok now...getting back to ur question, Alpine amps are ok. But if what you want is brand matching, stick with alpine and find a better amp model. Here's one that might interest you but it just costs more:
MRD-M500

RMS Power (at 12V,20Hz-200Hz)

Per channel into 2 ohms : 400W x 1
Per channel into 4 ohms : 200W x 1
RMS Power (at 14.4V,20Hz-200Hz)

Per channel into 2 ohms : 500W x 1
Per channel into 4 ohms : 250W x 1

Not a bad amp. Along with the amp, maybe get:

SWR-1241D

Power Handling Capacity (RMS) : 300W
Impedance (Nominal) : 4 ohm + 4 ohm

From the look of things, this setup will run you about $700-1000. Depending on where you go. But it'll bump!

i dont know whoever told u the wiring will make the sub hit lower..thats a load of bs..

if u want to run a 2ohm load...i advice u to get the subs in dvc 2ohm
u can wire them in parallel to achieve 2 ohm...

imo...u could go cheaper and have great SQ
the alpine type R 12" @ ikesound is 120 shipped...
i can sell u a barely used us acoustic amp that does 450watts@2 ohm <rated at 12.9v...so itll give u more power if ur car is getting 14.4v> for 120 bucks...

total is around 250 <shipping included> and u have a really nice setup...

if anyone else wants the amp..lemme know

Get an Alpine MRD-M500 Amp, and don't connect them like you sketched out in that drawing. I have a mono amp powering my 2 Alpines and you just put both wire ends inside the female port. Then screw the screw in place and you won't need a third wire. It's better than the Y formation you showed us. My amp is 1400 watts at stable load. 800 watts for my subs though. That's 400 each sub and it still isn't enough power for me. But Alpines are good for clearity and that's why I bought them. Quality is better than Quantity of dB :P
