Yes, brand name amps DO matter. As a matter of fact, brand names matter in anything you buy. Brand names are more expensive and you always get what you pay for. LIke stated above, if you're gonna shop at pep boys for parts, dont buy the parts at all. For audio equipment, i recommend brand names such as: Alpine, JL Audio, Clarion, Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Infinity, etc.

brand names do matter. The fuse on the back can tell you a lot about what the amp will really put out to what it says it puts out. Some companies can say the amp puts out 3000 watts when its really pushing 500 (no joke). It matters with the volts (12-14) and the amps from the fuse. So trust me, go to an audio shop and talk to an employee and look around, you always get what you pay for unless you get it for free.

Just because something is more expensive...it doesn't make it better.
Also, don't limit yourself to just brands that you have heard of. There are many obscure brands out there that will outperform many of the "well known" brand names for about the same price.
Shop with your ears, not your wallet or your eyes.
