Default 98 accord, Alpine Type R

I bought Alpine Type R back in 05 and I put two in the rear. Compared to the stock front speakers and apline rear, the alpines sound lower (vol) than stock front speakers. the connection is very well on the speakers. do they need an amp for the speaker?

depends on the deck that you have. From what i know the max wattage factory speakers can take are roughly 40 watts. Alpine, im assuming they are in the high 100+ range. The rms of the factory deck is around 15 watts, that should be enough to push your alpines, however, if you think they are lacking power, by all means; add an amp.

that 52x4= max wattage

that deck is more like 15x4 RMS
even if the box says 20rms its really more like 15...and with that said its a very dirty 15...

pushing type R's with that deck alone will sound like a nightmare. under powering those speakers will be a horrible idea...get a 4 channel amp trust me...

i think that deck only has one set pf pre-outs so you would have to get a RCA splitter... you will loose fade but should still keep balance.

i say ( if you can afford it, if not ignore this) get a better deck.

don't go with sony the have horrible sound quality i would personally go with a pioneer or a kenwood head unit and if you are running them off you factory head unit it does send more power to the front speakers than it does to the rear

The Alpine Type-R have a pretty low sensitivity at around 87db. They will not sound good without the proper amplification. Last years required 75 watts RMS and this years require 110 watts RMS. I'll be feeding mine 100X2 RMS or more depending on incoming voltage.

Alpine designed the Type-S around the concept of replacing factory speakers that are powered by either a factory or aftermarket headunit. They have a much higher sensitivity at 92db I believe. They'll sound much better.

Tedmond, as an MECP installer you should have known this. Factory or aftermarket headunit amplification is far from sufficient for the Type-R line.

They're great speakers, they just need the right power.
