the last time i bought a new car radio, the guy installing it said it wouldnt fit in my car.. that there'd be a gap or something. I have a 97 Honda Civic Ex and i'm interested in a Panasonic CQ-C8301U

Radios are sized by DIN units. Single DIN, double DIN. It is pretty much standard. In order for it to fit in your car, you will most likely need a dash kit that will allow for the unit to be mounted and made flush with the rest of your dash. That unit will fit fine into your car.

that will work but looks a little expensive for what it is
local car stereo places as well as best buy and circuit city will have the dash kits on hand and cost about $15
order a stereo from cruthfield as well as many other online places and you get the kit for free
then just get a honda wiring adapter and you should be set
