Not necessarily a short. I had the same problem a while ago but instead of tapping my amp, I would move the headunit and the thumping would be there. Check all of the wires (especially the ground), make sure they all have good contact.

all the wires on the amp and subs are good. they all have contact. this problem just all of a sudden started. they have been hooked up like that for about 4 months and slowly started beating harder and harder w/o music. is there any component in an amp that goes bad easily. if so, can it be easily and cheaply replaced?

Like KuttinEdge said, check the amp's ground wire. Make sure that it's grounded to bare metal (ie. not painted) to unsure a solid connection.

Are you sure that the head unit is good?

yeah the head unit is great. as far as the ground, it is grounded like it always has been. BUT, it is on a painted surface that i poorly scratched the paint off of. but it had never given me probs be4. heres another thing, it has been doin that for a couple weeks and it has actually stopped now (about 3 days ago). it was on mute and has been ever since. i dont wont it to start back and would rather hear no music than that unrhymic repetitive bumpin. ill take it off mute today and see if it does it and maybe get some sand paper and sand it better.
thanks for the replies, ideas, and suggestions. keep em comin if u think of any...i need em.
