Default GAS Mileage

So, I filled up my 2.2 SOHC VTEC with 93 octane to see if the MPG would increase.

Nope. Granted, the motor hasn't run or sounded that good in a few years, but I found no significant difference in gas mileage after 340 miles. I will, however, try to see if it runs as well with mid-grade. I can here valve tapping on hills in 3rd gear, 3k RPM with 87. That went away with the high grade. Anything to make her go zoom-zoom!

Any suggestions for better performance and ways to help keep her in top shape? Gold plugs? Conical air filter?

The octane really doesn't do anything that noticeable as far as performacne goes, even racing blue, doesn't really effect it all that much. However, it's going to be along term thing, you aren't going to notice it immediately as much as you will over the long term. For example, if you continuously use premium gas, you'll notice that your car will shift smoother, knocking will be eliminated, and your car will accelerate quickly and quietly. You'll be able to tell a substantial distance in performance after a good 2 weeks of use, just because your fuel system will be cleaned out, and the better your fuel system works, the more efficient it will be.

You have to keep in mind that most fuel systems are running at a fairly high capacity for what they should be handling anyway, as upgrading the fuel system is quite expensive. So, keeping that in mind, you should take good care of it, and use only the best fuel possible. I always use premium fuel and I add fuel injector cleaners and that sort of stuff on a regular basis just to keep it running efficiently. Try adding in fuel injector or fuel system cleaner and I gaurantee after 3 full tanks of use, you'll notice a beautiful difference.

High octane gas cost too much. id live with rougher shifting and some knocking if it allowed for me to save a few dollars at the pump

errr, i don't think that was valve tap that went away with higher octane gas.

sounds like the pinging with 87 went away with higher octane gas.

No, No, No...not true. That's what the gas companies would like you to believe. All gas is required to have detergents to "clean out" your fuel system. Octane is simply a rating that tells you how fast the fuel burns.

Bottom line: if your car is not tuned for premium or mid-grade you are literally blowing money out of your tailpipe. If you are using a higher grade gas to hide engine pinging, you are trying to avoid a bigger problem.
