can i just use water, i didnt get the 'clay lube' stuff

It can but it isn't as good. The reason why is the lube that comes with the clay bar kit is a cleaner as well that lifts off dirt. Water may allow that dirty to scratch while you rub the clay bar over it.

You can try diluted car wash soap.

the lube that came with my clay kit was Meguiar's quick detailer. just go to the store an pick it up for $4.
