i'm curious as to what you're trying to achieve by doing this. a h3 bulb has a transverse filament, while the 9006 bulb has an axial filament. if you stick a h3 bulb into a lamp housing designed for a 9006, you'll get a crappy results because:

1) the h3 bulb is so much shorter so the filament wouldn't be in the right place to generate the correct beam-pattern originally designed for the 9006.

2) due to the transverse filament, you'll get a big block of light that will shoot all over the place and no amount of adjusting would fix it, and you'll have everyone high-beaming you back because you're getting light into their eyes.

as for the h4, if you're able to place the low beam filament exactly where the 9006's filament is, then what you'll get is the same exact beam pattern, except 1/2 of it is cut-off because of the little shield inside the bulb.

my advice: this project/idea is not worth trying.

usc do you have aol? if u do plz msg me, xplodezz, i was trying to achieve more light output which is why i wanted to mod a h3 bulb.. i wanted the beam pattern to be different because of the fact that it might output more light, with these brand new 6-8 month old 92 accord headlamps, its hard to see some times, yes i trying all diff types of bulbs, its the lamps, the DOT pattern on them sucks and i wanted to get a diff pattern which would output more. thanks bro

if you want more output, get the Depo knockoff headlight assemblies or something else. the H3 bulb is generally used in FOG LIGHT applications. If you think an H3 bulb is going to get you more light...then you're thinking in reverse. In my opinion, this is the reason all those aftermarket projectors suck as bad as they do. Most of them use the H3 bulb for the low beam. I tried them angel eye crap before I bought my ecodes, I felt like I was driving with ONLY fog lights, since the beam didn't seem to go beyond 5 feet off the front of the car.

man you asked this question all over, even on the lighting forum.

Anyhow, the focal point and direction of fous as was already mentioned is way off.

Here's what it looks like when you put the wrong bulbs in a housing(and YES, this is HID, sad isn't it)

here's what happens when you put the right bulbs in

You'll be wasting your time and money trying to do this. If you are really concerned about lighting I've been seeing OEM full HID setups going on ebay for about $300, and bi-xenon full OEM HID setups going for $350-$400. Otherwise you're jsut wasting your money.

wow. never saw it like that before. i might just get fogs to make up for some loss of output infront of the car like the first 4-8 feet.. thanks alot for the great pics thats the first time anyone has taken the time to prove a point and by showing me that i have a reason to know what a messed up beam pattern actually will look like as opposed to being told its not good. thanks alot man appreciate it. i puta bid on a 9006 Hid kit hopfully il get it. il prolly get outbid but who knows lol
