Honda is recommended 5W20 and since no major oil company had this grade should I stay with recommendation or switch to Mobil or Castrol synthetic oil 5W30 ?

I ONLY use AmsOil - or Royal Purple. BOTH companies make 5W-20 - I just had an OIL BY-PASS Filter installed - where 10% of the oil gets wilters 100 times smaller particles thann full flow oil filters - and then goes through a larger full-flow oil filter.

ANY Synthetic is better than a non-synth. UNLESS YOU HAVE MORE THAN 70K miles - DO NOT USE SYNTH IF YOU HAVEN'T before the 70K mile mark or so - or the deals aren't used to it, and you WILL leak oil.

I'll take some pictures of my AmsOil By-Pass filter set-up soon ... VERY sweet stuff - Engines with this set-up, even in big deisel setups look like they have NO engine wear, even after 100K.

Honda filters are crap - especially the small ones - Def., not enough roopm to effectively filter or keep from spill-back. Juet because you haven' had problems, doesn't mean it['s really doing as good as a job as good stuff. Poeple run cars 200K miles with generic dino oil and crap fram filters - but that doesn't mean that their interns don't have a lot of worn seals.

Fast_Draw,

My BMW 325I is using 5W30 Castrol synthetic and I have been using Mobil1 on my previous Maxima and never had any problem.

Castrol makes 5W20, that is what I have in my CL right now. I am switching to Mobil 1 Synthetic next oil change... And I use a Purolator PureOne filter.

Since your car is new, try AMSoil, they're the best rank all around because they're full sythetic, change oil every 25K miles or 1 yr which ever come first and Change oil Filter Twice during that period, or so I've heard

25k miles is a lot. I still wouldn't go over 7-8k between oil changes personally.

royal purple has been said to have poor for synthetics.

try taking the opinions of these guys.

NEVER exceed the manufacturers recomendations for oil changes. Honda says 3750 for severe use or 7500 for normal use for the Prelude. If you exceed these limits, Honda can deny any warranty claim you may have if you have an internal engine problem.

That said, as I mentioned in earlier post, it is BETTER to use 5w-30 full synthetic than to worry about Honda's recommendation and stick to 5w-20 oil IF NO 5W-20 synthetic is available in the brand you use. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic. It's about $4.00 per quart and is good enough. Amsoil and Royal Purple are more expensive and not as readialy (sp?) available as Mobil 1. Now, some of the German manufacturers use synthetic from the factory, and they have monitors that count # of engine starts, and thus tell you when to change your oil depending on the number of cold starts you have had since last oil change. They extend the oil change interval in this way to over 10-15K miles.

But NEVER exceed what the manufacturer says about the oil change intervals.
