My manual says to use 5W-20 year round. 5W-30 is ok in a pinch, but not recommended in lieu of 5W-20. (I have the V4 VTEC).

The reason: 5W-20 is basically hydraulic oil used in braking systems, fork trucks, etc. It has a lower viscosity than 5W-30, which has a lower viscosity than 10W-30. Thus, it is more fuel efficient - less resistance to flow. However, until recent Honda R&D, 5W-20 would break down (thermally) inside the engine and higher weight oils were necessary.

u sure it isnt because honda had to increase gas mileage figures to meet standards?
What exactly is new/diff about the new f23 in 6th gens that makes 5w20 better than the f22 in 4th/5th gens that used 5w30?

it's an I4. I is for inline, since the pistons are in line.

V is where the pistons are arranged in a V shape, such as a V-6.

Sorry about the engine error - my first 4 cylinder car. Anyways, according to the link below, they [tree loving hippies] wanted to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions nationwide, so the govt required 5W-20 oil on newer cars. However, the difference is neglible so 5W-30 is fine.

According to someone I went to school with - his work was in tribology, or friction at the molecular level - Honda was finally able to cost-effectively machine parts with tighter tolerances that benefit from lower viscosity oils.

So, the truth is probably somewhere in between.

The manual for my 2000 F23A1 states to use 5w-30 or 10w-30.

I had run 5w-50 synthetic--I switched to 5w-30 synthetic for the last year and I have seen no difference, so go figure. The best gas mileage I ever had was on 5w-50, so I may switch back because its easier to find 5w-50 then 5w-30 Syntec in my area.

Please elaborate on the engine codes - if you read above, you'll notice that I'm an idiot.

5w50 sounds rather thick, you might get better mileage w/ 5w30?
