changing atf fluid review
My lazy arse went and changed my automagic tranny fluid yesterday. Its been 40k miles since it was last changed
. Before the change my tranny would click from P all the way down to D1. It sounded like a manual. Whenever the tranny shifted gears it would slightly slip and not catch for a second. Well while draining the fluid I noticed it was dark gray and stunk like a mofo. The drain bolt had gray gunk all over it too. I added 2.7 quarts of fresh red Honda atf fluid and it made a night and day difference. Shifts are smoother and quicker than before. It still clicks from gear to gear but its not as loud. Just wanted to share my $0.02 on this because I know theres eleventy billion peeps in here who havent changed the atf fluid for mintues and complaining about their trannies going kamikaze on them. Yeah Im talking about you. Ok back to lurking.

I changed my atf fluid on Sunday. the atf in the tranny was brown too....damn, it was dirty....drove it after and the shifts were better...i used penzoil..
dont go to jiffy...do it urself very simple...take off ur right tire, u will see the bolt...just unbolt and drain...
then fill 3 qts of atf fluid and u are done... do it again on ur next oil change and u will be set

It worth it.. If you don't want any more Auto trans.. problem..
I worked at a Jiffy lube type of place about a month ago.
If you can change your own oil, then just change the ATF 3 times within 100 miles and you will be good to go for about 25 bucks total.
The tranny flush is very over priced for something a careful person could do with about 8 qts of fluid (<$25), two buckets , and two long rubber hoses. There is no moving parts in the tranny flush machine. Open your hood and look at your tranny from the top. You will see two hoses. If you disconnect both of them and put two long rubber hoses on them and then put each hose in a separate bucket, you'd be well on your way to being done.
Next fill one bucket with fresh fluid and leave the other empty. Start the engine and the empty bucket will start to fill with dirty fluid while the "clean" bucket will start to drain into the tranny. Have someone shift the tranny through each gear (foot on brake please) and keep going until the fluid in the dirty bucket looks clean. Don't let the intake tube run dry!
Stop everything and reconnect the right hoses and check/top of the level and your done.
That is what you are paying $100 for.
Like I said for a DIY'er the easy way is to do 3 drain and fills.
