this might be a dumb question, but is there a difference between a racing cat, and a high flow cat? or are they in essence the same thing?

yes there's a big difference. a race cat is actually in no way a catalytic converter. it's simply a straight piece of shiny pipe with flanges welded on or it's a resonated piece of shiny pipe to keep the noise down. this is illegal and pollutes the air. not that i'm a tree huggin hippy, but you won't be passing emissions is MA with one. it will also stink and sounds like ass.

a high flow cat is a legal catalytic converter, it just designed for higher flow. it can make the car sound a tad more raspy and smelly on cold starts.

the cost difference is actually not much either nor is the hp gain unless your making seriuos power. those race cats on ebay go for around $60 and you get a nice carsound cat for $20-30 more.

imo, it should be illegal for places to call them as race cats when to real racers it's called a testpipe. i read tons of post where people ask about those ebay race cats and they think it is a real catalytic converter and it would suck to see someone get screwed at emissions checks or by a cop cause of false advertising.

ahh, its a test pipe! Weird, I've never heard it called by that name. I thought it might be like some super highflow cat or something. My bad.:slap:
