mandrel bends in an exhaust pipe is where the bends retain the diameter of the pipe. some places will do crush bends, where the diameter of the pipe is smaller where the bend is.

the points where the pipe is crush bent will cause a restriction in the airflow. mandrel bends are superior because there are no restrictions.

i don't have any pictures, sorry

"Mandrel bending is done with a special machine thas uses a non-crushable insert, called a mandrel, that goes into the pipe while bending to prevent it from becoming crushed. The bend is smooth, which helps with exhaust flow."

VERY WELL SAID both of you guys above:thumbup:

Crush bend is what most of the muffler shops will do, and on the bends, you can see a crease (is that the right word?) and the texture is different....kinda looks like one of those straws that u can bend and will stay bent.

Heh, thanks, nizmugen beat me to it. Also, I am not Mike Kojima. He is the author of Honda/Acura Engine Performance , a book I got from Amazon.com that covers the basics. I recommend it.
