99 Accord auto, very poor mileage
Hi,
I have a Honda Accord 2.0 Executive, auto, 1999 reg, 98k miles.
I now almost exclusively do local town driving , but im sure the mileage has recently plummeted to about 220 miles to the full tank.
I believe it has a 14 gallon tank, so that works out at 15mpg which is awful. Im pretty sure it used to do about 290-300 to the tank only a year or two ago.
It recently failed emissions at MOT. So after that, i had the rear exhaust changed, the o2 lamba sensor changed (original honda one), i had a basic service (spark, oil, air filter), also engine flush, no smoke etc. I also had the timing belt done (it was due, 98k miles on the clock)
It passed the MOT without issue, but the mpg is awful.
Anyway, is there anything else i can check or change that would affect the fuel economy drastically?
Honda dealer said I would have to send it in for a £45, check to see what could be wrong.
Any quick things i could check/change myself?

Hmm I dunno but maybe try resetting the ECU, that might help the car "learn" all the stored memory all over again. Pull the negative (black) wire off the battery and let it sit for a minimum of 30 minutes, and then plug it back in. All stored settings will be erased so it'll take a little bit of driving for your car to "learn" the settings again. That might help.
500 accord is correct, if your car does not fully warm up to operating temp. then youll have a rich mixture all the time thereby consuming more fuel.
also if you have access to a scanner, you could plug it in and see the fuel trim of your car.

Any check engine light? Does it seem to run fine other than the bad mileage? You might try a good tune up, air filter, new wires, new spark plugs, take the distributor apart and clean it up or replace if it looks old. With the price you guys pay for fuel in England, I hope you figure it out soon!
