ebay "intake chip" Fraud?
I'm just trying to get some opinions and feedback on these. I'm not sure if anyone has come across these items on ebay, if not just do a search for honda intake chip and you'll see a bunch of people selling these so called performance upgrades, but what you won't see is anyone emailing you back explaining why their product doesn't work and just sets a check engine light, nor will they have any answer to why they claim that this product will not in no way damage your engine. Have any of you ordered one of these yet and had any sucsess with it? The theory behind it may actually work, all though they are selling the wrong resistors or at least the person I ordered from is. Basically here's the scoop on it, it's very inexpensive, but all you get is a 20 cent resistor that you use to bypass your intake air temp sensor, only problem is you jump the two wires that plug into your intake sensor with the resistor and it just sends 5 volts back to your ecm and sets a code immieditaly because the ecm thinks that either your sensor is bad or you have a short. So this product has no chance of working because it red flags your intake air sensor and no longer looks to it for input, therfore it hurts performance. Anyway if anyone is curious to no how exactly this method could work, or wants to know more detail about this to try and get some more power for 1 dollar or however much you can by a resistor for keep this thread going and i'll keep you up to date on my reasearch on this.
Don't quote me on this, but the purpose of the intake air temp sensor is to measure the temp of the air coming in so the ecm knows how far to advance or retard the timing, because if your getting really hot air in it won't advance timing as much as if it was cold air because it doesn't want to bring combustion temps to high and cause pre detonation. By bypassing the air temp sensor and tricking the ecm to think the air coming in is always cold you'll get the maximum timing advance the ecm will send, now it's also going to look at the coolant temp sensor as well, but it should advance timing at least a couple of degrees throughout the rpm band. But of course you'll need to run higher octane gas in order for this to work otherwise you'll have pre detonation.
Exactly which proves that spending $400 dollars on a chip will only waste 400 dollars and possible give you a few horsepower,

I mean, really, if it really gave you that dramatic of a performance increase by simply bypassing the IAT, why aren't we seeing this mod from performance specialists. Do you really think they would spend millions developing internal mods and forced induction systems and completely miss this one? Also, why would OEMs not just redesign their emissions systems to not use an IAT?

I bought one of these chips back in June of 2002. It was the first time I saw it on eBay, and I thought it was too good to be true. I never used it, and its still in the original box. Waste of $25.
