Screw the nut down till it stops!
Yeah, I put new springs on my '97 Accord about two weeks ago. When reassembling the strut assembly, I wasn't sure when to stop screwing the nut down onto the top of the strut assembly. I didn't remember it stopping at some point. And it looked like I was screwing it down soooo far that the piston (bolt) was going to hit up against the frame when installed. So I just stopped at some point that looked like a good stopping point.
Well, I had all kinds of rattling and shiit going on in my back end on the passenger side. Couldn't figure what the hell it was. I thought I blew the shock absorber since I've heard stories of this happening when doing a drop on Stock Shock absorbers. But there was still control.
Well, after I took the wheel off yesterday and pushed down on the axle, I could hear the problem in the strut assembly. So I removed the strut assembly and begin tightening down the lock nut some more. After about three turn, the mutha fukca stopped! I was like, "oh
". So I put the strut assembly back in and there was no more noise.
I then when and tightened the front strut assemble bolt (since it's easily accessible in the engine bay). The driver's side was tight, but the passenger side still had about 3 turns left in it before it tightened. Dammit!
So yeah, when you're changing your springs/and or struts, go ahead and tighten the top lock nut all the way down till it stops.

yeah, pretty stupid. but when you look at the piston of the new shock absorber, you see that it's only threaded at the top 2" or so. so when I was screwing it down, I was afraid that I was going to screw the nut past the threaded part and have the damn spring uncompress and shoot shiit all over the place.
ah well. nothing like doing a job 6 times over to get it right rather than taking it to an experienced mechanic

ahhhh, its all cool. slap me around like da biitch i was.
anyway, one thing that did startle me was the fact that the base of the Eibach Sportline spring didn't sit that well in the shock absorber's base cup.
i don't guess it's going anywhere
