Default Water pump question....help?

Last night my car overheated and there was no water in the waterpump. I refilled it with water and pored some water in the radiator. The engine was off and cooling down for about 45 minutes then I drove home for 50 miles. It didn't overheat at all, in fact it kept it's normal temperature. .....But these morning when I turned it on and drove it for 5 miles the temp stayed the normal stage but the water pump was empty. It drank all the water. My question is why did my car use up all the water in the pump? Whats the problem, can anyone help?
Thank You.

You sure you don't have a radiator leak? I would check the hoses, the radiator cap ... fill your radiator up with 50/50 water and coolant, run your car and look to see if you can see anything leaking.
