If you can smell gas, then I'd be looking at the ignition system first. Got spark?

This is very hard to troubleshoot without the symptoms actually occuring. If it's this intermittent I would suspect a fuel pump or fuel regulator valve, but this really isn't a 'DIY' project unless you have Helms manuals.

I tracked it down this weekend and replaced it. It was the Ignition control module in the distributor. It took a little patience to find but it was a good learning experience. Thanks for all your suggestions and help!!
