Yes.
Also, if you over inflate, you lose traction. Things like potholes are more likely to cause a flat.
If you under inflate, you'll ruin the shape of the tire. By sitting in park, the tires will develop flat spots.

If you can stand the jarring vibration, possible lost of control when hitting potholes, and blowout on longer trips, over inflated tires will get you more mpg. I would not personally take that risks to get extra mile or two. I would suggest the same as e3Nine indicated.

most tire pressure located on the door jam are designed for the smoothest ride possible which will lead to underinflation. most tires that have a max of 44psi (stated on the tire) should be set to 35 in the cold and 32 in the warm weather.
