Default speedometer test

Anyone know how to check speedometer? I recently have D4 blinking, speedometer wandering; code#4 and I follow the manual to check if the vss is bad. Acording to the manual, the vss is fine, and tell me to chnage the speedometer. Does anyone know this issue? I'm not sure, my speedometer is really bad, or my vss was working when I tested.

Dose it have you test hertz on the signal wire? that is what I would do hertz should go up with vehicle speed. Do you have a volt meter with hertz,h data or duty cycle?

I don't have one.
Is there any other way to check it? I'm thinking to buy a used speedometer cluster to replace mine, and see if the problem still exist. Any recommend?

Go to a pawn shop find a voltmeter with hertz. Diag it rite the first time so you do not wast money on parts if it it just a lose wire. I will help you.

Or ya it could be the cluster,or an open or shorted wire.

binking D4 = failing transmission

your speedo looks bad because your car is falling out of gear.

I've found a bunch of failed speed sensors and only one failed speedo head unit. I know how hard it is to test components that exhibit intermittent symptoms. I feel bad when I have to turn a customer away because of this and STILL have to take some of their money.

the engine light does not come on, only D4 blinking. I'm not sure if re set ECU, then take out the speedometer connector, it still gives me D4 code? Will I damage any other componants?
