Default Engine Starts and then Dies!

Hi, I have a 2000 accord v6 coupe with like 104K miles and every once in a while (sometimes twice in a week and then it might not happen for months!) here's what would happen:
I'll crank the engine and it'll start but when I let go of the key (back to position II), the engine would die after like 3 seconds. Now to get it to start I would run the RPM to about 3K as soon as the engine starts and keep it there for like 15 seconds and then it'll run fine. The car has never stalled while moving and I have replaced the PCV valve. I'm starting to think it might be a faulty ignition switch. Any ideas anybody? I really don't want to bring this in to a shop b/c intermitent problems from what I've heard are difficult to diagnose and I'm not about to pay someone to experiment on my car!

PS. It isn't the battery or alternator b/c they've been checked. Also, the engine always starts, just dies sometimes right after. That's why I had to give it gas for a little bit and then it'll run fine.

thanks!

ever get your EGR valve inspected? I have a feeling it's completely jammed up. By doing so, you're cycling too much exhaust back into the engine.

The EGR port was serviced around 80K under a recall. I believe it was replaced by a new kit. I haven't gotten that rechecked but I can't imagine that going bad in 20k miles. I might get the fuel pump looked at. Is that something I can test on my own or are there any other signs of a bad fuel pump? In a way, im hoping that this problem becomes permanent so that I can reproduce it to the shop.

id have someone do it.. when mine went bad it would start then shut off, then when i would kick it, it would have a delayed reaction with power loss "jerking and stumbling" with bad gas milage..it was actually an intermittant thing

My spark plugs just got replaced not more than 5000 miles ago(OEM Ngks) and I've been getting good gas mileage. I guess when I bring my car in for a timing belt/water pump change which I guess better be sometime this year seeing my car's got 105K, I can ask them to look at those things. I'll definitely let u guys know if I ever find out what's causing this exactly. Thanks!
