Default rpm bouncing

i don't know much about cars but last weekend i was just sitting in my auto accord and was just revving it while it was in neutral. but whenever i revved it past 4500-5000 rpm, it would bounce backwards and go back to 3500-4000 rpm. i varied the speed and length i pressed the gas for but it kept bouncing. could anyone tell me why it did that?

Just for future reference, don't do that. I'm not going to flame you over it, just refrain from doing it. It's bad to dry rev a motor under no load.

:werd:

theres a reason why it maxes out at 5000 and drops to 3500.

youre not supposed to rev that high out of gear.

stop it.

it's called a rev limiter to keep from damaging the engine and engine components
