I need to know why is the car idling heavily and it's like a flooding and the check engine light comes on and it won't let the car get out of gear it has a key hole on side of the gear lever and i can unlock it and it gets in every gear fine but won't change out but once. If the check engine light goes off while I'm driving it runs like it's brand new change out and everything runs right and everything while driving and if the check engine light blinks the car jakes with the light if it's come on while driving it might cut off at a stop light after putting the car in neutral i cranks the car back up and the lights stays on the car won't run right it hesitate and sturdier and it won't change out again nor take gas it jakes please help me out for all it's worth give me your address and I will pay you Your pal Josh it has been in the family and hold sentimental values please help thanks
i really cant follow u. what is jakes? surges, cuts out? any vibrations or noises when the problem occurs? how many miles on the car and what trim dx lx ex? do u have a tach? if so is it jumping up and down alot when this occurs? im assuming this is an automatic tranny? what is the fluid level and the color of the fluid? is the green light flashing at all in any of the gears when the problem occurs? does it light up at all? is this the original transmission and if so any repairs done on it? at the age of the car if its the original it could be failing.
other areas to look at would be your ignition switch on the steering column. the interlock solenoid by the gear shift. it could be the switch on the brake pedal that isnt allowing u to get out of park. the last 2 would apply to having to use the key to get the shifter in gear.
when was the distributor replaced last? O2 sensor?

2nd the tune-up. Mikki: How old are the spark plugs? When's the last time it had a tune-up? Is the airfilter 16 years old? Fuel injected or carburated?
For the check-engine light... In 1990 the ECU's ability to store error codes was sorta primitive, but search around for a procedure for your year/model. It changes depending on the year. Maybe you simply pull back the carpeting & watch a blinking LED. Later years, you find a particular plug, jumper it with a paperclip, & watch the CEL blinking it's code.
